Hasda la Vista?

Oh – I don’t think I’m going to spoil anyones party with this one!
Why I’m not upgrading to Vista from XP Pro is much the same the question as – why are you not upgrading from your blue car to a red car – bearing in mind the red car is slower and looks slightly different to your present one, oh and you absolutely must buy it!! Really compelling reasons to grab your attention and urge you to buy, I don’t think so!
When we talk of an “upgrade”, Microsoft really got this wrong. An upgrade usually involves you getting something better with more useful features. If the vendor does not provide this then what possible reason would you upgrade, apart from blind curiosity, event the VP of Microsoft can’t come up with any decent reasons to upgrade. Bear in mind also, that upgrading or changing to a different operating system has a non-trivial effect on your usual working practices, everything from email to developing software for clients. It’s a major undertaking, and with Windows 7 on the horizon, I don’t want to be doing 2 upgrades within 2 years – it’s not fun!
In summary – I’m staying with XP until they actually make physical improvements and compelling reasons to upgrade. The forthcoming upgrade should IMPROVE on XP, it should leave it for dust and should take advantage of my multicore CPU – let’s get that one very clear. In fact if I had a new laptop with Vista pre-installed I would want to downgrade – and what’s really funny/wierd, is Microsoft are allowing you to do just that! Yes, you can now buy a copy of Vista and have the option of downgrading for free!
